Cicero regained the lead late in the game in a 10-9 victory over visiting East Syracuse-Minoa on Friday, thanks to a finish that left some people scratching their heads.
Cicero had built a four-run lead in the fifth inning and then had to hold off ESM’s charge…
Cicero got on the board in the first inning. Jackson Fudge drew a walk to start and scored a run when Dom Ciccone tripled on the first pitch of his at bat. Nicholas Capece dropped a perfect bunt, scoring Ciccone while beating out the throw to make it 2-0, Cicero.
In the 2nd inning, Michael Mooney and Ryan Keil drew walks. After stealing bases, both ended up scoring on wild pitches while Sean Bombard, Drew Matyasik, and Connor Pearce were at bat.
ESM got back into the game over the next 2 innings, tying the score 4-4 with Connor Pearce pitching.
In the bottom of the 4th, Capece drew the walk and was hit in by a bomb of a triple by Jacob Calabria. Alex Smith and Avery Pankow followed with walks. Ryan Keil notched a single, scoring Smith to make the score 7-4, Cicero.
Cicero was able to pull ahead even more, as walks by Pearce and Jimmy Zampini led to a run when Jackson Fudge doubled to bring Pearce in to make it 8-4, Cicero.
ESM ended up scoring four runs and tied it up in the top of the seventh inning, 9-9. Runs came in off the arms of Capece, Smith and Keil (there were several errors during the stretch).
With a win on the line, Sean Bombard led off in the final inning with a single. He then stole 2nd base and then 3rd base before Drew Matyasik was walked. With Connor Pearce at bat, Matyasik stole 2nd base.
With 1 out, and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Carter Duncan attempted multiple bunts before a dropped 3rd strike sent him running to 1st base. ESM’s pitcher decided to chase Duncan to tag him out, and Sean Bombard stole home from 3rd base for the victory.
In baseball (and softball), an uncaught third strike occurs when the catcher fails to cleanly catch a pitch for the third strike.
Ciccone went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Cicero in hits. Ciccone, Capece, Calabria, Bombard and Fudge all had hits. Cicero stole 20 bases during the game as six players stole more than one. Mooney, Smith, Keil, Bombard, Capece and Pearce all stole mutiple bases. Michael Mooney and Smith led the way with four each.
Connor Pearce was the winning pitcher for Cicero. He went four innings, allowing four runs on six hits, striking out eight and walking zero. Capece , Smith and Keil entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Keil recorded the last five outs to earn the save for Cicero.
