The Cicero Rattlers started strong on Friday night against the Central Square Red Hawks 15u team as they looked to notch their 4th straight win.
The action started off with a walk by Lucas Thelen, followed by a single by Nicholas Capece. Jacob Calabria walked next, followed by hits by Ethan Matthews, Michael Mooney, Daniel Capp and Jack DeVinney. A Chase Mearon walk was followed by a KJ Cochran single and Jake Sadowski walk. The top of the first inning ended with the Rattlers ahead 6-0.
Nicholas Capece started on the mound for the Rattlers. He faced 5 batters and held the Red Hawks scoreless, giving up one hit while striking out 1 and walking 1.
The second inning brought in one run for the Rattlers, with singles by Sean Bombard and Connor Pearce and a Calabria RBI that brought in Bombard. Capece faced 4 batters in the bottom of the inning and retired the side with 12 pitches (1 put-out, 1 hit, 2 strike outs, zero runs).
The third inning started with the Rattlers leading 7-0. Mooney and Capp both singled to start, but the inning stalled on 3-straight strikeouts courtesy of some questionable calls by the umpire. The questionable calls continued as Capece returned to the mound in the 3rd inning. He started off with a strikeout, before giving up 2 hits and a walk.
With 1 out in the bottom of the 3rd, Ethan Matthews relieved Capece as pitcher. With bases loaded, Mathews started off with a put-out from the mound. A walk followed to give Central Square what would end up being their only run of the night. The inning ended on a fielders choice, as a hit to center field to Calabria led to an out at 2nd base.
The 4th inning started with a new pitcher for the Red Hawks. The new pitcher’s struggles from the mound weren’t helped by patient batters and a couple of questionable calls by the ump. Sadowski and Clary were walked, Bombard hit a single, and then Pearce walked to force in the 8th run. Hits by Thelen, Capece, Matthews, Mooney and Capp followed, catapulting the score to 15-1. With only 1 out and Jack DeVinney at the plate, a frustrated Central Square coach decided to end the game.
This was the 4th straight win for the Rattlers – and their 7th victory in 8 games.
Team quote for this game: “Ability is what you are capable of doing. Attitude determines how well you do it.”
