Cicero met up with their friends from ESM on Saturday afternoon for a friendly scrimmage.
Multiple pitchers got the chance to get reps as the two teams limited themselves to 5-run innings.
Pitchers for Cicero included Chase Mearon, Ethan Matthews and Ryan Becker.
While both teams had their share of hits and plays, the most excitement came in the form of a pickle play…
As a runner tried to advance home for ESM, Jacob Sadowski (Cicero) caught the throw at home plate to turn back the runner and get the pickle going. As ESM’s runner headed back to 3rd base, Cicero’s defense started lining up for a run-down.
After a handful of throws, the play would have ended in ESM’s favor if not for a backup catch by Ryan Becker, who was coming in from left field. Becker quickly got the ball back to home plate to keep the play alive.
Several catches later, Ethan Matthews sprinted from 3rd base to catch the valiant runner, who was sporting a well-deserved grin.
There were smiles all around as fans and players cheered for one of the funnest plays we’ve had in awhile – and the longest pickle play in recent memory.
Cicero ended the day with 19 runs off of hits from Mearon, Capece, Thelen, Matthews, Bombard, Pearce, Capp, Sadowski, Fudge, and Smith. Every player got on base at least once for Cicero.
